Mercy-Argenteau had a large part in the marriage of Marie Antoinette when Archduchess of Austria to Louis, Dauphin of France, later Louis XVI. At the time of these letters he was the ambassador of Marie Antoinette's father (Emperor Francis I of Austria) to the court of Versailles.
The volume also includes a facsimile copy of Marie Antoinette's final letter to her sister Elisabeth and manuscript notes about the letters in several hands.
