The year of writing is not given, however, he dates it "Monday evening, 18 July." Adam received the commission from Lord Northumberland for the design of Syon House in 1762 and work on the house continued into 1769. July 18 falls on a Monday in 1763 and again in 1768. It appears more likely that it was early in the project and thus more likely to be 1763.
