Description
1 print : line and stipple engraving on steel ; sheet: 182 x 127 mm
Notes
Engraved facsimile of Poe's signature below image.
Originally engraved in 1844 by the Philadelphia engraving firm of Welch & Walter after a drawing by A.C. Smith and issued as an illustration in Graham's Magazine, February 1845. Welch & Walter's original steel engraving plate was later acquired by John Chester Buttre, a New York publisher and engraver, who trimmed it to a smaller size (8 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches), burnished out the torso and extraneous matter of the original image, and surrounded the remaining bust with an engraved oval matte. The resulting image was then printed in volume two of Lillian C. Buttre's American Portrait Gallery; individual copies of the Poe print were also available from the Buttre firm at ten cents a piece. Cf. Dean, M. Portraits & daguerreotypes of Edgar Allan Poe (1989), page 18-23.
Part of a collection of letters and manuscripts related to Edgar Allan Poe. Items in the collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record (MA 644) for more information. NNPM
