Summary
Acknowledging receipt of a letter of October 8 on November 19; writing that he is intending to be introduced by Colonel Smyth to Colonel Byng of the 29th Regiment; expressing gratitude to Lady Wentworth for her following his advice to regularly follow her physicians' advice; admitting no good news of himself and seeing no near prospect of improvement; relating this to news of "the total annihilation of discipline" and "the return of every sort of debauchery and licentiousness" to the Gibraltar garrison; lamenting those officers under whom this breakdown occurred are still serving there "while I am suffering cruelly in every sense, for having followed the opposite line"; discussing the prospect of a French invasion of Britain, which he always believed they would never attempt; thanking him for sending "the Port Wine from the Isle of Sable"; conveying good wishes of Madame de St. Laurent, who is suffering as usual from the British cold seasons.
