Describing the scene as he writes in the "Maurice" cutting room, with editor Kathy Wenning nearby; describing in detail the recent incident at the Golden Globes where he accepted an award on behalf of Maggie Smith, only to be scolded by award show staff; describing the National Board of Review awards gathering, where he accepted on behalf of Daniel Day-Lewis as well as for best picture; listing the other awards ceremonies he's due to partake in, including the Oscars and the DGA awards; describing the avalanche of "congratulatory telegrams and notes, bottles of champagne & flowers"; observing that "people stop me in the street on 1st Ave. to shake my hand-- perfect strangers. Well, what does it all mean?"; noting that the "M.G.M.-Zanuck/Brown fiasco has been settled" in his favor-- "What blessed things Pay-or-Play contracts are!"; telling her he is reading a screenplay adapted from the novel "An Innocent Millionaire" and describing it as "a more ambitious 'Hullabaloo'"; noting that he liked Tom Cruise in "The Color of Money."
