Notes
Written on the Kapoor/Kendal family's letterhead.
While James Ivory's note says that this letter is from Jennifer Kendal, the date-- most sources report the date of Kendal's death as September 7, 1984-- postmark, and contents would seem to indicate that it was written by her grieving husband, Shashi Kapoor.
Envelope addressed to Mrs. Ruth Jhabvala, Apt. 14G, 400 East 52nd Street, New York, NY U.S.A., and postmarked October 22, 1984.
Provenance
James Ivory.
Summary
Noting that this is his first letter to her; telling her he has "read and reread your loving letter a hundred times"; describing how his children are trying to take care of him and he is trying to appear brave for their sakes, while mourning Jennifer ["Jane"]; also describing grappling with finances and all the things she used to take care of.
