Summary
She is in Courtalain, waiting for news from him. Monsieur de Bauffremont left Paris that morning to go to Champagne. She says he can't imagine what she feels every time she returns there, despite the painful memories. [Probably referring to the death of her son Leopold-Paul in 1842: she seems to see him at every step she takes.] There are also happy memories of her parents. They would be surprised at all the changes the chateau has undergone. Asks him to tell her what he thinks of the policies of Minister Merle. If Mr. Benoit is made Minister of Finance, she insists that Pastoret obtain a position for a protégé tax collector who truly deserves advancement. She is very happy with the King of Naples' reply. Asks him to give her regards to their friend Antonini if he sees him.
