Summary
Advising the recipient to "read for the bar & succeed in life" if he wishes to play an effectual part in the socialist movement; observing that the "socialist movement is choked with men without professions & unsuccessful men. One self supporting, able socialist barrister would be worth a large railway truckload of devotees without means or worldly experience"; going on to write that he has "really thought out this question" and pointing out that (Sidney) Webb "did exactly as I counsel" and "hence his immense importance in the movement;" adding that he is coming to Oxford and that he would be willing to visit the recipient's society if it can be worked in with a visit he has planned to make to "the Toynbee Hall people."
