Summary
Thanking him for his "friendly letter", but cautioning him not "fall into the error of supposing that a man is great & good & benevolent because he does work you like or does work that you think has a good effect"; going on to state that he does not know that he "loves humanity", and that he is "bored by wars & international troubles & I chuck a book at them very much as you might chuck a book at a squalling cat"; observing that the Rev. J.R. Black probably "loves humanity & feels for the Bottom Dog much more than I do", adding "if the Bottom Dog started the fight, made the trouble & so forth, I don't care very much if he gets his full licking."
