Writing that he has got "the very latest news from my base of operations by means of Hick & a speculum" (a reference to his physician Dr. Henry Hick) and adding that "I've nothing to rival your magnificent productions"; stating that has got a civil list pension for £74 a year; informing him that "Gip" (i.e. his young son George Philip Wells) "is enquiring for you constantly ... He will probably bring you more live snails than you will know what to do with."
