Wanting to reply to his letter from December 11th; discussing taking one's fiction seriously; looking forward to reading letters from Longfellow's wife and thking about "that dreadful last flaming hour and awaking from sleep like that to such a vision which was yet an actuality"; recieving "your notes and comments on my T.L.S. bread-and-cheese articles" and recalling marketing petroleum and saying "Even here romance stole in--there were three or four grades of this ordinary burning oil called White Rose and Royal Daylight"; recieving "a box file containing roughly as many old reviews--cuttings from the Saturday Westminster Gazette" by post; "sinking for the last time (probably) under the dead weight of 'things to do'"; blessing Walter.
