Notes
Early 19th century manuscript facsimile written on vellum of the first the printed edition of Leoniceno's treatise on syphilis, Libellus de Epidemia, quam uulgo morbum Gallicum uocant (Venice: Aldo Manuzio, June 1497). The manuscript created for the Parisian bookseller Charles Chardin (1842-1826) and attributed to "Fyot", evidently one of two known calligraphers and facsimilists by that name who were employed by Chardin to supply leaves in manuscript where printed leaves were missing from volumes, as well as manuscript facsimiles of entire printed works. The two calligraphers working under the Fyot name have been identified as "Fyot aîné" (F.F. (François-Florent) Fyot) and "Fyot jeune" (J.S. Fyot), and are sometimes referred to collectively as "Les frères Fyot". Cf. Grolier Club. Aldus Manutius, 2015; for further information of Fyot, see: "The brothers Fyot, Charles Chardin, and the making of manuscript Aldine facsimiles on vellum", from Robin Halwas website (robinhalwas.com), "Notabilia", viewed June 4, 2025.
