Summary
Thanking Chapman for her letter and three copies of the American edition of Harriet Martineau's autobiography; writing at length about the book and Chapman's editing of it; saying "As a record of a woman's work [....] it is marvellous & is a refutation of the commonplaces about woman's capability & position"; adding "For myself, I hear her talk as I read -- & shall delight to carry on this intercourse with her -- I do not read the newspaper without a sort of under current, of what she would probably have written to me on the stirring events or debates of the day! And the 3rd vol. will carry me still farther in vivid associations!"; commenting on the critical reception of the book; mentioning Martineau's niece; wishing Chapman "health & strength [...] to minister to the infirmities of the sufferers who I understand are your daily care."
