Summary
Writing that the the Prince of Wales has sent them "four pheasants and a hare"; complaining that the rooms are cold; describing a dinner party where the guests were seated uncomfortably closely together; describing an amusing dress worn by Lady Harberton ("she put her foot on the fender, and I giggled internally, she looked like a gigantic black and blue cochin china hen"), a guest "talking enthusiastically à la Ritchie style" in praise of cabbages, cauliflowers, and Jerusalem artichokes, observing "How on earth does one to keep his countenance under these circumstances", and mentioning some Japanese pictures owned by "Mr. Hart" which were met with great enthusiasm by the company, her account illustrated with a sketch of a tiger; describing some of her fellow dinner guests; informing her sister that "My manuscript has gone to the Good Words office" and that she has declined Edgar's suggestions that she "butter" up Donald Macleod in her accompanying letter; mentioning friends and acquaintances, including a visit from "Miss Barrie" who called at Earl's Terrace and "heard that bad news for the first time"; discussing household matters.
