Summary
Thanking Rebecca for her letter and reassuring her that she is not "fretting because of public opinion" because she's "been talked about and written about so publically and so unflatteringly by every government official I've met, in Europe and abroad, that my hide is now like granite!" and saying this is especially true for England; clarifying "I wept because I've been beaten, because a blackguard struck me and downed me and I've been powerless to hit back."; recounting a visit from "Norah Ervine" and that "I thought her so dull and loutish that I'm astonished she has brains enough to be malicious" and saying "something or other is always being said--especially about Pidoo, who is 'news'!"; hoping Rebecca's flu is over and saying she is going to Paris to have an infected sinus treated "by the best known specialist in France" and feeling pain and also "regret for Pidoo" [her nickname for H.G. Wells, see MA 14645.1] and describing his ability to "do without others" as well as his caretaking; saying she is "glad he'll have a few weeks in England"; hoping Rebecca "got the fruits and liked them" and sending "cordial wishes for the success of your new book".
