Notes
Probably written before 1628 or after 1669: In 1603, following strong flooding of the Rhône, one arch of the Pont d'Avignon collapsed, then three others in 1605. Repair work didn't start until 1628, interrupted by an epidemic of plague, and the bridge was not usable again until 1633. Two months later, two new arches were swept away by the Rhône. By 1644, the bridge was missing four arches, and a flood in 1669 swept away more of the structure.
Provenance
Bequest of Gordon N. Ray, 1987.
Summary
Concerns the repairs needed to the Pont St-Bénézet (also known as the Pont d'Avignon), which crosses the Rhône River at Avignon. The document discusses the bridge's problems, points out that the rubble from it is making navigation on the Rhône difficult, and discusses how the cost of repairs will be divided up.
