Notes
Date and background information on this collection from the text of a letter from James Ivory to Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, dated May 31, 1966, describing the ceremony [see MA 23840.277]. In the letter Ivory mentions that both he and William Shawn took photographs of the event, but it seems likely the majority of images in this collection were taken by Ivory, as Ivory himself only appears in the two color enlargements.
Snapshot photographs, all black and white except for two color enlargements.
Part of a collection of film director James Ivory's heavily annotated shooting scripts, editing notebooks, and small scripts. Each of the thirty-one films he directed for Merchant Ivory Productions is represented in the collection, beginning with the production company's first film, The Householder (1963), and including, among others, The Europeans (1979), A Room with A View (1985), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Golden Bowl (2000), and The City of Your Final Destination (2010). The collection also includes two films directed by Ivory's partner, Ismail Merchant (In Custody (1994) and The Mystic Masseur (2002)). Items in the collection have been cataloged individually; see collection-level record for more information.
Inscriptions/Markings
The smallest photo, a portrait of baby Erik, is inscribed on the verso, "Erik Jeremy Ross / May 29, 1966"; one of the two color enlargements is inscribed on the verso: "The 'christening' of Erik-- [Summer, crossed out] May 29, 1966--Lurking inside the church door, refusing to be photographed, was J.D. Salinger, the other god-father."
Provenance
James Ivory.
