Sketchbook containing preliminary sketches and studies for illustrations, chiefly for the works of William Shakespeare, executed on approximately half of the volume; the sketchbook was inverted in orientation and recommenced from the other side of the volume when the artist started his new series of drawings for Shakespeare; earlier sketches and studies of a wide range of subjects, some of them dated "1903", were executed on the majority of the remaining leaves; with annotations and notes in crayon and ink throughout.
