Sketchbook containing preliminary sketches and studies for illustrations for the works of William Shakespeare executed on over half of the volume; the sketchbook was inverted in orientation and recommenced from the other side of the volume when the artist started his new series of drawings for Shakespeare in 1903; earlier sketches and studies of a wide range of subjects, the first of them dated "1895", were executed on the majority of the remaining leaves; with 6 pages of verse in black crayon and annotations and notes in crayon and ink throughout.
