Summary
Two of a series of literary sketches by Poe which originally appeared in Godey's Lady's book under the series title "The literati of New York City." The series was issued from May to October of 1846, with the sketch on George Bush appearing in the May 1846 issue of the periodical, and the longer piece on the poet Mary E. Hewitt in the issue for October 1846. This fair copy of the two literary sketches differs substantially from those published in Godey's in 1846 and was evidently used as copy by R.W. Griswold for inclusion in his 1850 The Works of the Late Edgar Allan Poe, vol. 3, entitled "The literati". The manuscript bears a compositor's name, "Anthony," at the top of the leaf in pencil at left, as well as pencil markings throughout indicating cuts made by Griswold while editing the texts.
