Notes
Year from postmark.
Envelope is from Ismail Merchant's personal letterhead, labelled (in green, possibly in Merchant's hand?) "Letter from Ruth about 'Lovely World'" with notes regarding this letter in blue in Ivory's hand, which read: "-- a film never made. Filmways cheated MIP and Ruth and refused to pay for her screenplay when Ismail rashly gave it to them in advance of payment and contractual obligation. This bad experience was very much taken to heart by us and it never occurred again. In those days she didn't yet belong to the Writers' Guild."
The script being discussed in this letter is "A Lovely World," a never-produced sequel to Merchant Ivory's "Shakespeare Wallah."
Provenance
James Ivory.
Summary
Returning "a very tattered and battered manuscript back again" and going over the script and characters with detailed notes on each character and the changes she has made.
