Summary
13 letters (some with enclosures) and cover art concerning the publication of Tanning's novel Chasm by Turtle Point Press, 2000-2004. Included are 9 letters from Tanning to Jonathan D. Rabinowitz; 1 letter from Rabinowitz to Tanning; 2 letters from Tanning's attorney, William H. Roth, to Rabinowitz; 1 letter from Rabinowitz to Roth; 3 proofs of the cover art for Chasm; Tanning's original lettering for the cover; and 2 copies of the promotional blurb for the book by Tanning. Letters concern preparation of the book for publication, Tanning's pointed dissatisfaction with the publisher's promotional material for the volume and the emphasis it placed on her marriage to artist Max Ernst, her unhappiness at not receiving a copy of the galley proofs prior to their distribution to members of the press, her indignation at the changes made to her text without her permission, and the legal steps she took to withdraw the book from publication in June of 2001. Subsequent correspondence dated 2002-2004 includes a letter from Tanning to Rabinowitz expressing regret at the dispute over Chasm and offering to reimburse him for money spent on the project, followed by his reply, dated February 6, 2002, recounting his wife's escape from the 90th floor of the World Trade Center on September 11th and telling Tanning not to concern herself about the money he spent on Chasm; with two letters from Tanning to Rabinowitz, dated August 10 and October 19, 2004, the former concerning a proposed interview for a "Knox College publication" and the latter acknowledging the receipt of a hat from Rabinowitz.
