Summary
Observing that "Your baleful prediction about Shakespeare Wallah's reception by the public in India seems -- thank God!-- far, far too grim"; passing on word from various quarters of how well the film is doing in Bombay and the details of further runs in other cities; attributing the large profits to Merchant's managing to double the ticket prices, and the fact that "we won our battle over the [censor's] cuts"; admitting that he was literally dizzy at the thought of the money they are making; describing the enclosures he is sending-- a profile of Joseph Losey, who is thinking of using Foo [Felicity Kendal] in a film, "a photostat of what the censors wanted cut," and a letter from Ruth to her mother [not present], which mysteriously showed up in a book in the office; commenting on some points in the "Shakespeare Wallah" sequel script; observing that Merchant seems to have come around to the idea of casting Dilip Kumar in the Ustad film [later, "The Guru"]; telling Ruth she should go ahead and write an outline for the Ustad script; swearing her to secrecy, and hoping that they can shoot in India again directly after "Vertical and Horizontal," if "Shakespeare Wallah" proves profitable enough; announcing that both Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen have agreed to be in the Satyajit Ray's science fiction film ["The Alien," which was never produced]; and that Ray disliked Ved Mehta's novella "Delinquent Chacha" "intensely"; asking her to tell Jhab that he and Merchant want to give him power of attorney to deal with "Shakespeare Wallah" in India, though they plan to contact him as well, and that "Prabhu" will help him; saying they have not heard from Paramount, but are slowly casting the film.
