Summary
Returning the "imaginary interview" to Ivory with some edits; worrying about Merchant's mental state-- "Ismail's usual frenzy," presumably about their latest film, "Bombay Talkie"-- and musing on why she and Ivory are less prone to that kind of work-related anxiety; admitting that "A few interesting winter visitors are beginning to show up in Delhi"; offering a long, very detail description of a Sufi gathering she and Jhab recently attended, hosted by a pair of Dutch women; describing a young "hippie couple who started off from England about 4 months ago and have been slowly travelling overland ever since," their living situation and their roommate, a wealthy but frugal Indian businessman named Bob; saying that yesterday "I had a letter from Penelope Betjeman who is travelling by van to India" and wants to visit her at Flagstaff Road "to have a bath"; viewing her as a part of the Raj-- "I thought that goddamn Raj had died now once and for all and for good ... but no it keeps coming back to die again all over my doorstep"; describing how she and Jhab and a friend named Graeme Wilson spent a happy evening reminiscing about Dr. Fabri and laughing -- "we were literally writhing on the floor with merriment"; relating a humorous anecdote about Dr. Fabri and his wife Ratna; saying she would like to attend a film screening tomorrow, but not the discussion to follow, and wondering if she can sneak out before it starts; expressing concern again for Merchant's wellbeing, and entreating Ivory to stay out of his way and be supportive.
