Written on stationery watermarked "1880".
Dated "Wednesday", inscribed with a suggested date of "May 5, 1881" by former owner; however, it should be noted that May 5th fell on a Thursday of that year, suggesting May 4 as the probable date of writing.
Forms part of a collection of letters by English journalist, author, and editor, Frederick Greenwood (1830-1909), and other members of the Greenwood family.

Summary
Informing her that he will be sending her a couple of checks and will continue to send a copy of the St. James (Gazette) to her every day; remarking on some bad news regarding Jessie's health and asking that he be informed about her progress; writing that all is well at home, that "the hedgehog is reported lively", although he has not "made much impression upon the host [i.e. an infestation of beetles] he was called in to disperse; writing that he attended a performance of Othello on Monday, and that, following dinner at the Rabelais Club, "I wrote a little article about it wh[ich] you will all [see] in today's St. James Gazette.
