Regretting that her "outing" seems to have done her no good; stating that he feels "an additional weight of despondency ... all round"; mentioning that "'Sophy' was reviewed by an old fellow named Clayton, very clever & keen & not at all the man I should have supposed to have gone far wrong in such a matter; & I took the precaution too to give him a word of warning"; adding that he is to dine with (George) Gibbs tomorrow "to discuss the affairs of the paper" (i.e. the St. James Gazette).
