Summary
Confirming receipt of a letter and thanking him for the assurance that the manuscript for "The Two Baronesses" is in safe hands; expressing disappointment that Bentley is disappointed with how short it is but commenting that it is only two leaves shorter than "The Improvisatore" and expressing dismay that "in enlightened, sound thinking England, they should multiply a book's worth by its size"; pointing to several short yet influential works by various authors; hoping "The Two Baronesses" will have a similar appearance to "The Improvisatore"; describing the structure of the manuscript and giving suggestions should the tripartite division need to be changed; acknowledging that the letter may have come too late to influence printing decisions; considering the exterior and interior appearance of the book; defending brevity; expressing pride in this work, especially in its maturity, and further defending his choice of conciseness; dedicating the book to Bentley; inquiring regarding the copyright status of the German edition of Edward Bulwer Lytton's "Harold, the Last of the Saxon Kings" and commenting on his own work's copyright status; giving instructions as to whom he wants copies of his book sent, including to Edward Bulwer Lytton, Charles Dickens and Walter Scott's son-in-law, John Gibson Lockhart; reporting that no Christmas tales have come to hand, nor are any in bookshops; offering pardon for the length of the letter.
