Saying that he has the flu and has had to stay at home; describing the effects of the bombardments, but adding that there have been very few deaths in relation to the amount of shelling; writing that he received a letter from Madame Morisot saying that her son Tiburce had been taken prisoner at Mayence; mentioning that Madame Picard brought them a basket of potatoes several days ago; saying that he was amusing himself by doing a small portrait of her, based on a photograph; saying that Charles Jeantaud came to share his solitary dinner; sending news of the movements of Eugène and Gustave Manet and Ferdinand Leenhoff; referring to the high numbers of deaths from sickness; advising her to stock up on provisions in preparation for a return to Paris, since the danger of famine, even after the siege is lifted, is very real.
