Summary
Consisting of three distinct letters, each signed, to his wife, Suzanne, his mother, Eugénie, and his sister-in-law Marthe. To Suzanne: saying that he is glad that they left the city because the rigors of the siege would have been too much for his mother; sending news of the Prussian attacks; reassuring her and advising patience. To Eugénie: writing that he is comforted by the knowledge that she has Suzanne with her, who will take good care of her. To Marthe: saying that, because he fears her house will be bombarded, he went there and packed up clothes, curtains, and other items in order to put them in a safe place; promising that he will save the portraits in the house as well, before the shelling makes reaching the building impossible.
