Expressing amusement at learning that Balston is back in the Army; remarking on his letter's letterhead and writing that he is "rather enjoying" his military duties, but wishes that they "didn't take place in this detestable island"; noting that he "had the pleasure of driving into Oxford, in uniform, before I left London", and describing his fellow officers as "quite charming, but confessing that he hopes to "worm myself into the Staff before I'm finished."
