Writing on board a train and complaining of a tremor that has been affecting both his hands; expressing great gratitude and relief that the war has ended, reflecting on the war, complaining that he does not like the modern "thanksgiving" church services in celebration of the peace, anticipating the erection of numerous war memorials "in bad 'art' and bad taste" and noting that it is proposed to mount bronze plaques with the names of the fallen on Durham Cathedral; noting the importance of the current holiday season and sending her Christmas greetings, and reflecting on the hardships and challenges the post-war world will bring.
