Summary
Congratulating Balston on the Ashmoleon Musuem's request for three of his pictures; stating that he has "just been to 5 sales & got nothing", as there was nothing he really wanted, and adding that a painting for which he reluctantly bid £10 went for 82 guineas; remarking that he had the pleasure, at that sale, "of seeing two rival rings of dealers running each other up to quite absurd prices"; observing to Balston that "What you learned about the Grange is most interesting & does explain what we found so difficult" (possibly a reference to the The Grange near Northington in Hampshire), and asking him if he knew about (the English architect) William Wilkins, who, upon submitting his design for the National Gallery building, was "told that he had made the columns of the façade much too big" as he was required "to use columns from Carlton House, which the authorities had got & had no other use for."
