Summary
Write that he would be happy to undertake a design for "the Lawrence series of volumes; pointing out that he has not read (D.H.) Lawrence with the exception of "Sons and lovers", and asking "Does this matter?", stating that he assumes that his device does not need to represent Lawrence's work, as Balston is considering using it for volumes of poems by other writers besides Lawrence, and suggesting that "a figural device, suggesting the universal theme of man, woman, etc. etc might be apropos"; outlining his proposed plan to pull color proofs of the design once the black proof is made; telling Balston to "make no apology" as he is "delighted to undertake these 'small' jobs"; concluding "I have just been elected to the Athenaeum!!!!!!!" With a drawing pen and ink on the verso showing a man with a long beard and a halo walking out of doors.
