Manuscript is undated and unsigned, but can be reliably attributed to Saint-Exupéry's period of wartime exile in New York. He was spurred to write by a visit to an exhibition of French art, likely the Navy Relief exhibition of French masters at the Paul Rosenberg Gallery, which opened on May 5, 1942.
Manuscript is untitled, but sometimes referred to as "Appel aux Américains".
