Describing how she came back to town with the intention of writing to her; acknowledging receipt of Barbara's invitation and declining it, though to do so is "a very great piece of self-denial"; sharing that she has to prepare a composition for Margaret Gillies and Mrs. Hawkes' Composition class and a work for Mr. Pilcher by Thursday; asking if she can come another day; noting that Alfred has not come home yet, but he will be pleased to accept her invitation; thanking her for her kindness to Maggie and Charlton; describing how she met with Margaret Gillies, who hopes Barbara and Bell will go to her for another sitting; hoping that Barbara will sympathize with her in finding Mr. (Francis Stephen) Cary to be "a snob"; noting that even though she enjoyed studying at his academy, she had to leave due to financial troubles; expressing surprise at hearing that Mr. Cary was asking after her and saying he was proud to have her as a pupil; expressing gratitude for Barbara's friendship; commenting on political events related to King Louis Phillipe.
