Summary
Writing that he would be happy to provide Balston with a reference if he requires one, agreeing with him in his observation that he will not be able to enjoy a holiday as he intends to be engaged in the task of raising his Territorial Forces Division, and although it "does not promise success ... it must be tried whole heartedly"; informing him that he has "just heard from Goulding - he is going to London tomorrow until Wednesday" and suggesting that Balston ring him up as "He has the time, and if he will do it he would make an admirable man to run the division.", adding "I will write to him.", remarking that he does not think that "residence in Dublin" will make any difference and providing instructions for advertising an event in the papers and directing him to contact the officers of the 3rd Division and "let Goulding arrange the dishes and charge the whole cost of organization and dishes against those dining.", proposing various dates for the occasion, and noting that "Smith loved the Victory March and was very happy he becomes a manager next January."
