Summary
Confirming that he received Balston's registered letter, along with a payment of £5 for some sketches, remarking that he "chose exactly the right moment to appreciate my efforts in colour" as the money "will probably enable me to attain the end of this quarter without having to borrow", and explaining that borrowing would have been necessary as he needs to purchase doors and windows for the house he is currently "getting in order"; instructing him to keep all of the sketches regardless of his plan to present one to Mrs. Greenland, as he will "send her some others to choose from"; commenting that "the law about exportation of prehistoric things was only proposed but not passed", writing that he does not know whom to believe, and asking him to convey his thanks to Mr. Smith "for his part in the 'affaire'"; asking how Balston will "manage about the odd one of the 13 Soloman Wises by bisection?"; referring to his accompanying drawing and remarking that it gives an "idea of my beatific state of mind - that is if only the damned carpenter would send the doors & windows".
