Summary
The collection consists of letters and printed material addressed to Herbert Cahoon from friends and colleagues. Many of Cahoon's correspondents were poets, artists, printers, publishers, editors, librarians, bibliographers, scholars, and others involved in literary fields in the United States during the early to mid-twentieth century. The collection spans Cahoon's time as a curator at both the New York Public Library and the Morgan Library & Museum (then known as the Pierpont Morgan Library). Many letters concern Cahoon's creative work, including the publication of his book of poetry Thanatopsis (Banyan Press, 1949). Others contain information about his scholarly projects, including a James Joyce bibliography on which Cahoon collaborated with John J. Slocum. A substantial part of the collection consists of Christmas and New Year's greetings from Cahoon's correspondents; many of these are publications from small presses like the Banyan Press and the Spiral Press, notable for their content, design, and associations.
