Inscribed and initialed in red ink in a hand believed to be that of Peter Taylor Young, Procurator Fiscal of the Sheriff Court Glasgow, at the head of first page: J. 259/5 P.T.Y. Same mark on envelope.
Inscribed in ink at the bottom of fourth page: "Desk, Lodges, JM, BML." These are the signatures of Glasgow sheriff-officer John Murray, and his assistant Bernard M'Lauchlin. "Lodges" signal where the letter was found.
Dated "Monday evening"
With postmarks; address panel: To / Mr. L'Angelier / 10 Bothwell Street / Glasgow.

Summary
Writing that she has safely received his parcel, and that it is in the protection of her mother; hoping to write to him more in the future; wanting him to be happy and to have no fear of her proving untrue; reassuring him that he can think of her as dependable; telling him once again that he should not think of participating in the Crimean War (1853-56); stating that the thought of him leaving the country is awful; praying to heaven that he will not leave even if it means he will remain poor; feeling that his love would make her rich, and that she would be happy with a humble lot; describing how she has been going to bed early and being good.
