Comparison with other manuscripts by Carlisle suggests that this letter may possibly be written in the hand of an amanuensis.
Written on monogammed stationery from "Vice Regal Lodge" (i.e. Viceregal Lodge, a Dublin residence of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland)
Accompanied by an envelope with a note reading, "Lord Carlisle & / Duke of Devonshire / respecting Gussy's appoint".
