Inscribed and initialed in red ink in a hand believed to be that of Peter Taylor Young, Procurator Fiscal of the Sheriff Court Glasgow, at the head of first page: G. 219/1. P.T.Y. Inscribed in red ink at head of fifth page: G. 219/2. P.T.Y. What it means remains to be discovered.
Inscribed in ink at bottom of fourth and eighth pages: "Lodges, JM, BML." These are the signatures of Glasgow sheriff-officer John Murray and his assistant Bernard M'Lauchlin. The word "Lodges" signals where the letters were found.
Cross-writing on pages 1-4.
Dated "Tuesday morning, 3 o'clock morning".

Summary
Expressing that she could not sleep and has been feeling miserable for the past few days; hoping that he is not displeased with her; describing how she felt frightened when she got home after going to Town; worrying that she passed him on the street and did not see him; wishing she could be with him and wondering if it will be cool enough to meet on Sunday; describing how she fears disappointing him; wishing he could be with her to comfort her; stating that she will do all she can to ensure that she does not disappoint him; asking him to promise that he will not be angry if she cannot post a letter to him; asking him how he is doing and hoping that he can find a way to love her despite he faults; noting that Mr. Anderson was with her family recently; hoping to see him when her parents go to Town and after she puts the children in bed; reassuring him that he is her own dear husband. Postscripts noting that she passed Miss P's in hopes of seeing him, and that her sister B was with her, but they saw no one.
