Concerning a delay in the publication of an unspecified piece of writing he had expected to appear in Punch, and concluding "I still expect to hear the New Forest owl hoot from the pages of the popular periodical in question."; expressing his sympathy with her over her poor health and failing eyesight; remarking that he is pleased to learn that her son is now with her and to hear reports confirming how much he regarded "among his companions in Canada & the United States"; commenting on the current political situation in the United States, referring to it as "a lesson to us all", and observing that "Democracy, working without check ... has given the power in the South to the 'mean whites' & they are enabled ... to silence the conservative and moderating elements in the community."; remarking that if Franz Joseph refrains from enforcing further repressive policies towards Hungary, there may be a "postponement of the row we were promised in the Spring"; making additional comments on the political situation in Europe and mentioning mutual friends and acquaintances.
