Summary
Giving an account of the loss of his son, Frederick, who died at sea on August 4th, shortly after his departure from Haiti, where he had been for some twenty years; sympathizing with her on the loss of her eyesight, and expressing hope that it is not as serious as she feared, especially since her son Augustus has returned to her; noting that he left Deptford the previous year, as his services were "no longer required after the close of the Russian War", and describing his appointment at the hospital as "the best retirement I could get".
