Summary
Hoping that Charlotte will have fine autumnal weather as she heads for the Isle of Wight on the 7th; rejoicing that she will be near the sea breeze; finding it unseasonably cold; remaking that Matilda and her children left Monday last, and that Eliza accompanied them to Brighton, where they will remain for a week; noting that Eliza will then return with Edward, who is currently in Herts, but will join them at Brighton when Sartoris and his dear companions proceed to Paris; stating that there is "flying about" in the quarters, which makes her feel a bit sad, because she will miss them; she is "more disposed to feel grateful at the departure of the dear groupe in high health, than to murmur at the loss of my own gratification"; helping Sartoris look for a place in the neighborhood that he may purchase; thinking of Anna and wishing she could be with her though she is provided with companions; describing the total demolition of the Conservatory, and following the advice of a scientific nurseryman at Slough; noting that nothing could grow there before; sharing that the poultry yard is finished, and she hopes the barnyard will be in "high style" when Charlotte and her family visit; passing on Matilda's wish to tell Caroline that the books were exactly as she wished, and she sends her thanks; sharing that her mother sends love and is in good health; noting that Caroline has purchased a horse, a little mare that is at Mr. Raikes' service if he so wishes; sharing that Augusta wrote to both Anna and Caroline recently. Postscript at foot of page asking Caroline if she's read the "letters to Herber," which are "very interesting, though chiefly an eulogium upon the Author of Waverly", referring to Sir Walter Scott. She is referencing letters to R. Herber, Esq., from an anonymous writer, containing critical remarks on the series of novels by Sir Walter Scott beginning with "Waverly".
