Summary
Augusta is writing to Charlotte to update her on Maria's health and spirits, which are much improved, as are her nights, though she is troubled with inflammation of the eye; Maria is dreading the move to London, and Augusta hopes that Maria's fears about moving to London are more stressful than the actual move will be; remarking that her mother will not urge them to enter into general society, and may abstain as well; hoping that the expectation of trials will help produce a state of preparation and fortitude, should such trials truly await; commenting with sadness on their recent loss of Rosa, which is an "irremediable wound"; expressing faith in their heavenly father; apologizing for dwelling on painful feelings, though she is sure Charlotte will understand; planning to accompany her sister Eliza and Edward to Dover, a departure that makes them all feel a little melancholy, but it would have been too selfish to refuse a request from Matilda in her present state; expressing happiness at hearing that her father Mr. Raikes is better; hoping dear little Matilda is not suffering much from her teeth; asking to be remembered affectionately to Caroline and Anna; looking forward to embracing her, which will prove no slight compensation for a spring in London. Postscript noting that they have settled on the house in Brook and thanking her for her anodyne, as she cannot allow the possibility of a cough or cold in mild weather.
