Relaying the news of the death of her father; experiencing a "leaden melancholy"; sharing remembrances and reflecting on being his eldest child, "accustomed to consult his views and wishes in the most trifling, as well as the most important concerns of life"; commenting on the wellbeing of her mother, the remaining parent, who is "all we could wish her"; feeling a "vacuum in Worldly interests"; sharing that religion is the only place where she finds "real consolation"; expressing "unphilosophical horror" at witnessing someone on their deathbed for the first time; sharing that her father wished to be "opened for the benefit of mankind" and that Mr. Forbes was correct in his judgment regarding the source of illness coming from an obstruction of the liver or bowels; sharing that she is having trouble sleeping and exercising, but to please her mother, she is "trying the tepid bath"; commenting on the beauty of Hastings and the sea; conveying Rosa's love and well wishes to Anna in particular; hoping that her health will improve and assist her in regaining proper self possession and regulation; grieving for the misfortunes of Charlotte Susannah's friends; sending love to Mr. Raikes. Postscript notes that Matilda is pleading for a companion, but "the who is not yet determined."
