Summary
Reporting on the alarming and weathered state of her father's health, which caused them to leave Brighton for London at an hour's notice on Sunday morning; lamenting that he received no benefit from the seaside, and emphasizing how the "medical men" persist in calling his ailments muscular and nervous; she does not feel satisfied with their diagnoses; reporting that her father seems, at times, despondent, and she is finding it difficult to keep up the appearance of thinking lightly of his condition; reporting that her mother also came to Town with a severe cold, which confined her to bed; remarking that her mother's health has improved; despite all of this, she is feeling that these difficulties are "surmountable"; reporting that the rest noting that this time of year and its difficulties inspires a greater want of religion; "the pride of reason and the boast of intellect must sink before this awful lesson to frail humanity"; commenting on the "poor daughter" who attended D'Aguille's Academy and is now orphaned. Letter resumes Friday: Since writing the above, her father has been seen by Dr. Holland, who attributes much of her father's poor health to the weather.
