Summary
Saying that if he were her lawyer, her case would have already been won. He would use his influence over the colonel (unidentified) in the interest of her protégé. The colonel, however, is not himself, having suffered some kind of disappointment in the war in Italy. He has become bitter and is not thinking clearly about what is important, which the author of the letter finds inexcusable. He says that when a man is past age 40, he should be able to be more philosophical about the vicissitudes of life and not take them so seriously. Goes on to talk about Sulla, who resigned as dictator of Rome. He says that he, too, is resigning.
