Summary
Thanking her for the trouble she has taken on his behalf "in connection with M. Cousin"; noting that there is still "considerable time" before the election and "in the course of that time some opportunity may occur of influencing M. Cousin" and that "the sooner one could get M. Cousin's opinion the better. But we must wait patiently."; writing that he is sure M. Remusat would "do anything he could with M. Cousin" and that he has sent Veitch "a very good and cordial testimonial"; asking if she knows M. Emile Saisset, explaining that he has been asked to provide a testimonial but does not seem to grasp the nature of what is wanted, suggesting that she might explain the matter to him; adding that M. St. Hilaire is in a similar position as Saisset and is "making inquiries for himself", and remarking that they do these things differently in Scotland that they do in France; observing that "The Continental war news make a considerable sensation here", and that "we are also in the middle of a general election of Members of Parliament. The result of this will leave parties very much as it found them. The gain to the Conservative Party will be small; and will still leave them in a large minority in the House of Commons."
