Thanking her for a letter and an article; relating news of the Elgin family, including the current health of her mother (Elizabeth Oswald, Countess of Elgin), the loss of her sister Charlotte's child in childbed, and the poor health of her sister Frances' child, positive reports "from the East" of her brother Frederick, as well good accounts of the health of her brother Lord Elgin, and the recent assignment of her brother Robert to a "important & confidential post" (a probable reference to Robert Bruce's appointment as governor to the seventeen-year-old Prince of Wales in 1858).
